Scam artists working

By: First seen at www.thereporter.com

A group involved in a fraudulent sweepstake scam could be working its way through the city of Dixon, according to the Dixon Police Department.

The group called "Allianz" or "The International Australian Sweepstakes," either calls or sends a letter informing the recipient that they've won a substantial amount of money in a sweepstake.

Once they have made contact, the group tells the recipient they will have a representative come by with a certified check for the sweepstake winnings, and escort them to the bank to deposit it, requiring the person to pay the group a transportation fee from the bank deposit.

The Dixon Police Department asks that residents be aware of the sweepstake scam and take measures to protect themselves.

If you receive a check in the mail, contact your bank. It can verify the authenticity of the check. If you feel you have been a victim of this type of scam, contact the Police Department at 678-7070.
