Sweepstake scam - Police warning

By:
April 26, 2006
State police issued an alert Tuesday warning residents throughout Hampton Roads to beware of sweepstake and lottery scams.

The scam involves letters notifying recipients that they have won a large sum of money. The letter requests the "winner" cash an enclosed cashier's check for $4,800 and return the money to cover taxes for the winning amount, according to a statement issued by state police.

The person who cashes the counterfeit check is responsible for paying back that money.

Anyone who receives notification that they won $50,000 from "Western Lotto Sweepstake Inc." is being asked to call state police at (757)
424-6855.
